Surfing, an activity that first started with the ancient Polynesians then later introduced to Australia and California, it is now a globally shared sport, lifestyle and even closer to a 'religion' to some. Surfing is so much more than catching waves - it brings people together from all over the world, from all different backgrounds and ages, who all share a deeper connection to the ocean and its rhythm. Surfing has become a culture; ripe with its own language, fashion, style, attitudes, arts and music. It empowers people, connects them back to nature and gives a sense of purpose. People bond through this shared passion and shared mindset, forming alliances and genuine communities across the world.
'Surf community' is a candid documentation sharing the story of living in a surf community environment in Ericeira, Portugal - one of the top European locations for surfing. Looking out for one another in the ocean, facing difficult situations and growing stronger as a result; surf communities become family.
“Living in a surf community is being a part of something extremely real. Each person has a role to play an we all rely on each other to succeed, so, naturally, we do better. Our glue was surf and everyone was passionate about it. The best thing about this place was also it’s worst. Privacy was inevitably compromised, people can easily cross each other’s boundaries, impose their problems on you or invade your personal space without meaning to. A bad day on the camp can feel pretty heavy when you are expected to be around people all day. Despite all of the above, once you draw those lines and commit to them, you can thrive exponentially in an environment like this. At least, I’m happy to say that this is my story.”
