A series of images documenting a comparison between cultures.
Individualism – favours the individual as an independent entity and encourages self-promotion and self-worth.
Collectivism – individuals are part of a group and the needs of the group come before the individual.
As a mixed race person of western and eastern roots, the differences between the two cultures is something that has always fascinated me - observing both in a more detached way, yet still resonating way. I am aware of my own inner conflict between individualism and collectivism. Placing high importance on 'group' values and what would most benefit a group. Getting a sense of identity from the group and losing my individual sense of self to the group are all things I resonate with, possibly due to my Eastern roots and the values of Eastern culture. This, together with feeling the need to branch away into my own individuality and pave my own way. The fascination with Psychology, individual processes, and how the individual experiences it's environment. These are all things I believe are more from a 'Westernised' lens.
I am equally fascinated by the exploration of Psychology and Self, with the exploration of and Anthropology, Sociology, and of different cultures. This is something that could be compared to Individualism vs Collectivism.
This photo series is a reflection of these two conflicting experiences, showing the differences between the two cultures. And yet, it also shows that there is unity within them. Universal human themes of identity, meals, architecture, dancing and music, socialising, leisure, values, home and urban art; expressed differently through each Western and Eastern cultures.
The differences in cultures are beautiful and to be celebrated, they are what make this world so fascinating. Yet, we are not so different from each other where it is necessary to divide us.
All humans are essentially good, with goodness inside them, no matter the differences. All humans experience the same feelings, wants, fears and dreams. There is connection and deeper unity to be found with even the most different of people.
